The beans thank Ambassador and Happy Camper Mark Jemison for taking them out to the wilds of Down Under!
| Up and at 'em, campers! The beans recently trekked out to the Sovereign Hill area in Ballarat, Victoria, where there's GOLD in them thar hills! Since our favorite vegetable knows that the early beans get the bullion, they didn't waste any time getting out of the tent and down the hill... |

So - let's go panning for gold, shall we? (The beans have gold fever - you'll have to forgive them...) First up, the beans stop off at the Diggings, where you can pan in the creek for gold or discover the underground world of the miners in the Red Hill Mine and Quartz Mine. Now, I suppose you're wondering how the beans did in their gold panning, aren't you? Well, they're really not saying, but if you see the beans smile, be sure to check out that shiny new molar... |
| Built on a 60 acre site that is historically linked to the richest alluvial gold rush in the world, Sovereign Hill depicts Ballarat's first 10 years after the discovery of gold in 1851. (Let just say that these were the party years!) By the end of 1854, thousands of fortune hunters had flooded onto the goldfields from all over the world. Of all the places where gold was discovered, none produced more than the diggings at Ballarat. Today, more than half a million people (and one can of frijoles) visit Sovereign Hill every year, so if you're in the neighborhood, the beans highly recommend that you drop in for a visit. Even if you don't strike gold on your own, you'll still have a swell time. But if you do happen to find gold, just keep it to yourselves, okay? We don't need another 10 year gold rush... |

Next up, the beans visit what looks like a Western U.S. ghost town, but we have to keep in mind that this is Australia, not New Mexico... Actually, the "New York Bakery" here sounds awfully familiar, but the beans have been to New York City in the States, and they seem to remember a lot more people being around... But still, there's nothing that the beans enjoy more than a fresh baked cruller, so they did feel right at home. |
| Finally, for a little fun the beans decided to play some stone bowling, which is like the usual "polished lane and uncomfortable shoes" game that we all know and love, only with stones and no automatic pin resetter. (Add a talking pterodactyl, and you've got a "Flintstones" game...) Whether or not the beans enjoyed being the head pin or not remains to be seen, but they were seen praying for a 7-10 split. |
