"The frijoles are coming! The frijoles are coming!" Three cans of thanks to BATW Ambassador Fred Merkaloy for bringing the beans to meet Paul Revere!
| Midnight greetings by lantern, my fairly warned friends, and welcome again to Boston's Granary Burying Grounds, where today the beans visit the final resting place of Revolutionary War patriot Paul Revere. Paul was actually quite an accomplished silversmith by trade, but it was his late-night ride on April 18, 1775 that he was best remembered for. In an attempt to warn Massachusetts patriot members Samuel Adams, John Hancock, and the Lexington countryside of the impending approach of British troops, Paul made his famous ride/shout out of warning -- an amazing feat, especially when you consider he didn't have a bullhorn or a siren on his saddle. Of course, "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" will be forever part of sixth grader's required reading everywhere, thanks to the epic poem by William Wadsworth Longfellow. The frijoles are still holding out hope that one day there will be a world-famous poem written about them - as long as it doesn't start with "There once was a bean from Nantucket...", they'll take whatever they can get. Anyway, back to Paul. The beans thank Mr. Revere for his gallant efforts, and promise that if they're ever invaded, they'll scream at the top of their little legume lungs, too. |
