The ORIGINAL can of beans comes out of semi-retirement for a day of Buffalo Bill fun, thanks to BATW Ambassador Scott Hughes!
| Good morning, wide open plains people, and welcome to the wilds of Wyoming, where the beans found themselves on a picture perfect day not too long ago. Now, from looking at this spectacularly panoramic photo, you'd think that they'd been dropped off in the middle of nowhere, but I assure you -- there's a town nearby. And that would be Cody, Wyoming, population 26,000 and growing. As you may have rightfully guessed from the town name, Cody was named for none other than Colonel William F Cody, AKA Buffalo Bill, who founded the town way back in 1896. He spent a lot of time here in the area, promoting the need to turn the parched land into primo agriculture and livestock pastures. And in honor of his persistence, nearby Buffalo Bill Dam was born. Okay, not exactly "born", but constructed over a 5 year period. But you get my point, don't you? |

And why, lookie here -- it's none other than Buffalo Bill Reservoir, which was created by the construction of the Buffalo Bill Dam. The dam itself is 353 feet high, and at the time of its original construction (1905-1910) was the highest dam in the world. They say that there is killer windsurfing here, and the nearby fishing and camping are way popular. So when in Wyoming, the beans decided to do as the locals do, and gave the windsurfing a little shot. While I won't bore you with the messy details, let's just say that 15 ounce cans of black beans balancing on a sail-equipped surfboard doesn't stand a chance against the 60 MPH winds whipping through that canyon. And yes, that water is mighty chilly... Anyway, once they were rescued from the bottom of the lake, the beans admitted that they had fun in Cody, and hope to come back soon. Only next time they'll bring a life jacket. |
