A full Presidential salute (and pardon) to BATW Ambassador Chris Dean for taking the beans to see our 25th President!
| Hail to the chief and welcome to Canton, Ohio, the final resting place of President William McKinley. Born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843, McKinley was elected to Congress at age 34, then became Governor of Ohio in 1891. He was elected President in 1896, and again in 1900, where he was responsible for leading America through the Spanish/American war. Sadly, his second term in office came to an ugly end in September 1901, when standing in a receiving line at the Buffalo Pan-American Exposition, someone had the audacity to shoot him -- twice! He died eight days later, and Vice President Teddy Roosevelt took over and began his rough-riding ways... As for McKinley, he wound up here, entombed in a huge mausoleum in Canton. The beans salute President McKinley -- although he may have been President #25, he'll forever be President #1 in Beans Around The Graveyard. |
