G'day once again from Melbourne, and the Station Pier, where the beans are casting off on a sea cruise to Tasmania. For those of you in the mood for a leisurely cruise, the Spirit of Tasmania is just the thing for you. This ship provides a year round passenger, vehicle, and freight service between Port Melbourne, Victoria and Devonport, Tasmania. Built in Bremerhaven, West Germany in 1986, the Spirit has 1300 berths, plus room for 350 cars and 35 semis. Plus, according to their Web site, "When you travel on Spirit of Tasmania your fare includes your choice of on board accommodation with private facilities (except hostel), a sumptuous evening buffet meal and continental breakfast, plus all the entertainment you can handle." And exactly how much "entertainment" can a 15 ounce can of black beans handle? Well, you'd be surprised... we'll just leave it at that. |
| Of course, when you're in a hurry, (hey - beans have places to go, people to see, too!), you can always hop "The Devil Cat" instead, which takes only 6 hours to get to Tasmania. According to their official site, "Experience the exhilaration of crossing Bass Strait at 80 kph in Australia's largest commercial high-speed catamaran. As one of the fastest passenger ships of its type in the world, it will whisk you from Victoria to Tassie in just 6 hours. Built in Hobart, the 91 metre Devil Cat holds 740 passengers and 200 cars." The beans like the sleek style of the Devil Cat, partially because it reminds them of something out of a "Mad Max" movie. Regardless, it's pretty cool. |
