The beans don't "prickle" when they stop to thank BATW Ambassadors Bob and Marilyn Prindle and Doug and Marci Thompson for taking them to meet the Big Cacti!
| Top of the morning, desert dwellers and those who like their plants on the pointy side, and welcome to Arizona's fabulous Saguaro National Park! Located just outside of Tucson, the park is home to the amazing Carnegiea gigantea, a.k.a the giant Saguaro cactus. The park is home to over 150 square miles of hiking trails, camping facilities, scenic drives, bird watching opportunities, and yes - watching the cacti grow. Very slowly. Yes, it's here that you can come out and admire these oversized houseplants that can live up to 150 years, grow to be 50 feet tall, and weigh upwards of 10 tons. They grow fairly slowly - only a couple of inches in the first few years - but before you know it (50 - 70 years, so be patient) they've sprouted branches and flowers. The beans thought it'd be fun to hang our with the giant Saguaro cacti, but alas - they weren't too keen on pulling thorns out of their label after shaking hands, so instead they stayed to the side and admired them from afar. Sure, some cultures may find that rude or off-putting, but the frijoles know the difference between being polite and being poked several thousand times. |
