A shootout of thanks to BATW Ambassadors Bob and Marilyn Prindle and Doug & Marci Thompson for taking the beans to Tombstone!
| Howdy, gunslingers and steely-eyed poker players, and welcome to the historic town of Tombstone! Located in Southeastern Arizona, Tombstone today proudly sports a population of about 1,500 people, but back in its heyday it was a genuine boomtown, filled with silver mines, fortune seekers, gamblers, saloons, and yes, lots and lots of shady ladies. It was like every old Western you've ever seen, except with a lot more cussin', bloodshed, and carnal sins than Alan Ladd used to be associated with. Today tourism is the big industry around here, and if you listen closely, you can probably still here the piano in the saloon playing, or someone bellying up to a bar for a cold one. The beans were tempted to go into a saloon and see about joining a friendly game of cards, but they were afraid that their opening stake of 50 cents and an old stack of Disneyland brochures wouldn't get them very far with a table of professional gamblers armed with six shooters, so they decided to stay outdoors and enjoy the smoke-free sunshine instead. But Tombstone's greatest claim to fame happened way back on October 26, 1881 at the nearby O.K. Corral, where Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil Earp and their pal Doc Holliday had themselves a little mano-a-mano disagreement with the Clanton gang. Back in the 1880's, real men like Wyatt & his brothers would choose to have it out in the middle of the street, where the last man literally standing would be declared the winner de facto. When the dust settled, the Earp boys and Doc ended up as Hollywood movie legends, while Tom and Frank McLowery and Billy Clanton became vulture chow. It really makes the frijoles wonder: "Can't we all just get along???" Anyway, if you happen to be in Tombstone at 2:00 in the afternoon, you too can witness a reenactment of this famous shootout, only with actors and fake guns instead of the real thing. The beans are glad for this pseudo gunfight, too -- they'd rather not take a bullet for anyone's team. Anyway, the beans were fully caught up in the Old West spirit here, but I'm afraid to say that their 10-gallon black cowboy hat didn't exactly fit their little lid. Does anyone know where they can find a 2 3/8 tablespoon sized one instead? |
