The whole enchilada of thanks goes out to BATW Ambassadors Doug & Marci Thompson for taking the beans to tortilla flats!
| Howdy, cowpokes, and welcome to Tortilla Flat! Located in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona along the Apache Trail, Tortilla Flat probably has the smallest population of any place the beans have visited yet. There are a grand total 6 residents in this town. Six. Sechs. Seis. One more than five. That's it. So for once the frijoles really did feel like the Big Beans On Campus, because if nothing else, they were at least in the top 10 of most popular vegetables in town. Anyway, Tortilla Flat got its start as a gold mining camp way back in the 1800's, and then was used as a camp during the construction of the Teddy Roosevelt dam in 1904. Today it's a restaurant/post office/tourist stop outside of Phoenix. And as you can see on the big sign here, the motel portion of the town is officially "X'ed" out. Who knows what happened there - maybe someone stole the town's only set of towels, and that was that? Anyway, for those of you curious about such things, there was also a novel by John Steinbeck called 'Tortilla Flat', but that book took place in Monterey, CA, not here. There was also a 1942 movie of the same name, starring Spencer Tracy and Hedy (HEDLEY!) Lamarr. Neither one of them have anything to do with this town, but since the beans love any opportunity to make even the slightest "Blazing Saddles" joke, they couldn't pass it up. Anyway, the frijoles had a good time in Tortilla Flat, even though they didn't get to have any tortillas, fajitas, Spanish rice, or even a lousy churro. But the side of refrieds? That was covered. |
