It's a good thing that the beans aren't claustrophobic...Anyway, thanks to BATW Ambassador Bob Goodrich for taking them high into the Rockies!
| Hello road warriors, and welcome to the 1.7 mile long Eisenhower tunnel, located high in the Rockies! Today the beans get to pass through the highest auto tunnel in the world as they make yet another successful road trip. By taking the Eisenhower, you'll save yourself a 9.8 mile trek over the top of Loveland Pass, which is probably a good thing to have come February... | ![]() |

Located about 60 miles west of Denver, the Eisenhower sits 11,000 feet in the air, and tunnels right underneath the Continental Divide. It took 6 years to build the Westbound lanes, but only 4 years to head East. (Maybe they were in a hurry to get home?) 1,100 people worked 6 days a week building the tunnel, but now that's its complete only 50 people remain behind, mainly to plow snow, wash the walls, change some of those light bulbs, and oh yeah...make sure the carbon monoxide from all those cars doesn't back up. For just that reason alone, the beans salute 'em. |
| So here we are - deep inside the tunnel. The beans tried to put images of "trapped-in-a-tunnel" movies out of their can, and since there weren't any nearby dams to break, and Bruce Willis wasn't swinging by yelling cute catchphrases, it really wasn't that difficult. But I will admit that the frijoles were mighty glad to see the light at the end... Now, what they'll do when they get to the "Chunnel" across the English Channel is anyone's guess. | ![]() |
