Beans Around The World

Wall Drug - Wall, SD

The first part is from yours truly, from our Interstate trek in 1997. The final photo is courtesy of BATW Ambassadors Bob and Marilyn Prindle, from September 2003.

If you've ever driven Interstate 90 through South Dakota, Wyoming, or Montana, you must have seen the roadside signs every few hundred yards for Wall Drug. Offering 5 cent coffee and free ice water to honeymooners, hunters, and others, Wall Drug is the ultimate in tourist stops.

Located in Western South Dakota, in beautiful downtown Wall, Wall Drug is a mecca for anyone who has ever made a cross-country trip. I honestly believe that it is impossible to drive past Wall, SD without stopping at Wall Drug.

Welcome... to Jurassic Beans. Now, quick -- someone toss him a side of beef or something, before he decides to become a vegetarian and wipes out the beans! I mean, the frioles are all in favor of sharing and all, but sometimes you need to draw the line when it comes to 65 million year old prehistoric carnivores.

Here in South Dakota you'll find the honest-to-God real Mount Rushmore, but if you don't have time, you can always visit this scale reproduction in Wall Drug's backyard. It's smaller than the real thing, but you can get a whole lot closer without being dragged down the side of a mountain by a couple of really ticked-off park rangers. (Not that the beans would do such a thing, mind you...)

Here's a new photo from Wall Drug from 2003, thanks to Ambassadors Bob and Marilyn Prindle. They've apparently painted the place a little since the beans were last there, which is a good thing -- when you sit baking in the Badlands sun all day long, your coat of exterior latex fades rather quickly. The beans were glad to be able to drop back into Wall Drug again; you really can't beat their fresh made donuts, especially after you've just spent the last 500 miles in the station wagon reading road signs about them. (Talk about subliminal urges!) Now, if we could only get them to put up a sign advertising their black beans, maybe people will come from all around for those, too...
