A rose by any other name still wouldn't smell like black beans, but that's okay. Thanks to BATW Ambassador Bob Goodrich for the bloomin' pictures!
| Hello, flower lovers everywhere, and welcome to Wasco, California, a town where everything is coming up roses! Wasco is an agricultural community for the most part, with crops such as cotton, onions, potatoes, and almonds, but it's main claim to fame is its roses. Every September, Wasco hosts a Festival of Roses, with fun stuff to do, like a Rose Queen Pageant, concerts, field tours, arts and crafts shows, and a chili cook-off. (Which sounds good, although the beans do prefer their chili to be 'rose-petal-free'...) | ![]() |

Wasco calls itself "The Rose Capital of the Nation", and it's not too hard to see why. An incredible 65 - 75% of all roses grown in the U.S. come from the Wasco area, with 10 major growers kicking out over 50 million plants. So to all you guys out there, the next time that you drop $75 to impress your honey for your anniversary or Valentines Day, be sure to thank the nice people of Wasco for their hard work in making you a hero... And if you're not buying your significant other flowers on a regular basis, then it's time to get off your duff and do so. The beans said so. |
| Now, while this photo may be bean-free, I thought you'd like an upclose look at all the flowers in bloom. Yes, the Queen of Hearts would be thrilled with this field - they're all red. | ![]() |

Now, I'm not sure if I should tell you this or not, but not too far from where the flowers grow, you'll find the Wasco State Prison, where several thousand people who've landed in a bit of trouble are locked up. But the beans hope that you'll come to visit the roses in Wasco, and for Heaven's sake, don't try to sneak a file into your bouquet... |
